'And only 25 out of 350 Division I athletic departments made a profit in 2019.' - I find this interesting considering how often we hear the 'but the Football/Basketball team makes the school x amount of profit per year' - or is it a case of football/basketball making a profit and subsidising less 'sexy' sports in terms of potential revenue?

The data would say you are absolutely correct with your latter comment.

Interesting information, as always.

You note that only four D1 golf programs make a profit. What revenue sources are included in this calculation? Strictly sponsorships and donations? Or does this also include subsidies from the institution?

Thanks!

The NCAA considers two primary sources of revenue. Generated Revenue and Allocated Revenue. Generated Revenue is ticket sales, etc. Allocated Revenue is support from the university, student fees, etc.

College golf receives a significant amount of revenue from the Allocated Revenue portion as well as donors.

Thanks AP!

We've already seen it take shape! The PGA Tour has made changes to PGA TOUR U to allow a quicker pathway to the Tour. NIL will be interesting as always - golf is a unique sport!

The lack of “profit” in D1 sports is a stat of which most are unaware. People think the programs make money. They do not. Once I was in a discussion with a then AD at a non-football school and my buddies argued against him when he said few schools made money on football! Like they would know something he didn’t! Boosters support D1 sports I guess.

Donor money is huge in collegiate sports! It is a double edge sword - now significant donors have influence on decision making.

Send your buddies the NCAA research link - it has all of the data!
